BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are nonsurgical, physician-administered treatments that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe wrinkles between the brows, across the forehead, around the eyes (crows feet), and on the bridge of the nose. BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® injections are most effective in men and women from 18 to 65 years of age.
BOTOX® Cosmetic was the first treatment of this type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has been used for over twenty years in the United States.
The product works by blocking the chemical signal from the nerve ending to the muscle, resulting in an inability to move the muscle, which in turn smooths out the overlying wrinkle.
The treatment involves the injection of very small amounts of botulinum toxin into the underlying muscles to relax them. The actual treatment is well tolerated and takes just a few minutes with no “down time” or prolonged recovery period. The treatment takes effect in several days and the improvement generally lasts three to four months before the effect gradually fades and muscle action returns. Results may vary depending on the individual and the amount of product used per treatment.
Dysport® has recently emerged on the American market, but has been used in Canada and Europe for years.
Dysport®, which is very similar to BOTOX®, has recently emerged on the American market and has been growing in following. Europe and Canada have been using Dysport® for years. Both BOTOX® and Dysport® are Botulinum toxin type A, and are purified substances derived from Clostridium botulinum bacterium.
